“Okay, really quickly,” he says. “I’ve created a link to your new backup system right here. I updated your antivirus protection and did a thorough cleaning of the keyboard. You’ll want to watch out for this X key, though. It’s still a little sticky.”

I nod. “I’ll try not to type too many words with an X in them.” The second I say that, I think of half a dozen.

Excite.

X-rated.

Fixate.

Sex.

Climax.

He looks up at me then, and I could swear the same words just flitted through his mind. There’s a knowing expression in those brown eyes, and I’m positive he read the list. He had to, right?

Or maybe I imagined the look, because he’s back to pointing out some feature he updated on the laptop. Something about RAM or ROM or whatever. I can’t hear anything he’s saying over the voice in my head chanting, “Did he read it? Did he not read it?”

He turns and asks if what he just showed me makes sense, and I nod like a dummy. For all I know he just gave me a recipe for snickerdoodles or told me where Jimmy Hoffa is buried. I have no clue. He holds my gaze, and I try to blink away the panic.

I can’t take it anymore.

I have to defuse the tension or I’ll explode.

I finally blurt it out. “Look, Simon—I’m feeling a little flustered because I know you saw The List on my monitor when I dropped off the computer, and it’s really nice of you to pretend you didn’t see it, but obviously, you did, and I feel like I should explain that it’s probably not what you think it is.”

I drag in a deep breath to wash down that big mouthful of crazy. He looks up from the laptop then, a bemused expression in those light brown eyes. “What do I think it is?”

About The List by Tawna Fenske

thelist_tawnafenske_entangledscorchedAs the millionaire owner of a chain of computer shops, Simon Traxel isn’t normally hands-on with mundane repairs. But when a fretful brunette shows up with her fried laptop and killer green eyes, he makes an exception. And as it turns out, she needs more hands-on help than Simon imagined.

Brainy soil scientist Cassie Michaels has spent her whole life feeling like a grungy tree trunk beside her delicate flower sisters. To make herself more interesting, Cassie invented stories about her wild sex life—stories she’s expected to retell in vivid detail at a bachelorette party. Cassie’s attempt to catalog her biggest whoppers goes awry when she spills wine on her laptop and lands in Simon’s shop with her sexy list frozen on the screen.

But Simon’s interest is piqued, and the two strike a deal to make Cassie’s make-believe sexploits a reality. From steamy public romps gone hilariously awry, to sexy antics with kitchen utensils, their quest to conquer The List is equal parts scorching hot and adorably awkward.

As they near the end of The List though, Cassie and Simon second guess their pledge to shake hands and say goodbye when they cross off the last item. But will Simon’s big secret make that the one fantasy that can never come true?

Snow gusting against the window was the only sound in the room as he searched for a show for us to watch.

So quiet.
Way too quiet.
I fidgeted with my necklace, moving the small diamond back and forth on the chain. The last time I was in bed with Ryder… I didn’t even want to finish that thought, because it’d do nothing but make this situation worse. I chanced a peek in his direction.

He chewed the inside of his cheek, swiping through our options. “This is awkward, huh?” he said.

“We’ve achieved Urkel status.”

He chuckled and scrolled through the show queue. “Would you rather watch Law and Order: SVU or Criminal Minds?”

“That is quite possibly the worst Would You Rather question ever asked.”

His eyes cut to mine. “I didn’t know I was playing a game.”

“You’ve never played it?”
 He shook his head.
Lainey and I played this game all the time in college, and when we’d take road trips together. She always came up with the grossest ones. “It’s simple. All you have to do is ask the person which horrible thing they’d rather do. The harder the question, the better. Like would you rather lay in a pit of snakes, or eat questionably dead roadkill?” I pointed to his phone. “Oh, John Tucker Must Die. I like that one.”

“Negative, ghost rider.” He scrolled past my suggestion. “And what the hell does questionably dead mean? Is it still twitching, or are we talking suspicious cause of death?”

I shrugged. “The interpretation’s up to you.”

“You’re absolutely no help.” He swiped his thumb across his beard and contemplated. “I guess I’d go with the snakes.”

“Okay, now it’s your turn,” I said.

“Do I really have to play? I thought we were picking a show.”

I shot him a look.

“Fine. Would you rather have me or Chewbacca as your valentine?”

“Too easy. The spider.”
He put his hand to his heart. “You wound me.”
“Stop being such a baby.” I swatted at his chest and immediately pulled my hand back. Nope. Would not go there. “Okay, would you rather not be able to see or talk for a month?”

He answered instantly. “See.”

“Right. You’d probably go nuts if you couldn’t open that big mouth of yours.” His lips twitched. “You’re one to talk.”

“Excuse me?” Okay, I did have a tough time keeping my thoughts on lockdown outside the office, but that was my own cross to bear.

“Don’t even try to play it off like you’re innocent.”

I’d dated a lot of losers in the past, most who hadn’t even bothered to get to know me, but even after only hanging out a few times, Ryder had me pegged. He was perceptive. I saw the look in his eyes whenever I dealt with Jason. His attention focused solely on me was unnerving. “Jerk,” I sputtered.

“Now I know you’re holding back. You can do way better than that.” He scrolled through his phone again. “How about Die Hard?”

“Are all your show selections about death? I’m starting to worry I’d made a mistake coming over here.” My lips pulled into a smile and I quickly extinguished it. God, I wanted to hate him.

“Fine.” He continued looking at the Netflix queue. “Would you rather eat sushi from a taco stand, or lick an airplane armrest?”

“Good one. Sushi.” I pointed to his screen. “How about 10 Things I Hate About You? ”
He shook his head and chuckled. “Are all of your suggestions going to not-so- subtly tell me you hate me?”
I smiled sweetly.

“Maybe.”
“Just think, most people would find this to be a romantic escape. Two people, stuck in the mountains on Valentine’s Day,” he said.

“We’re Hallmark movie material, all right,” I deadpanned.

“Okay, fine. How about The Walking Dead?”

“Your show picking powers have been officially revoked.” I grabbed the phone from his hand.

“Hey!” He grabbed for the phone and I held it out of reach. “You’re going to regret that.”

Within seconds he was on top of me, playfully pinning me to the bed, his strong hands circling my wrists. Air evaporated from my lungs as our gazes connected.
I was immediately transported back to that night.
Tell me what you want, Zoey. Tell me what you need from me.

I swallowed hard. That was months ago, and those words still haunted me from time to time. Because he did exactly that, gave me what I wanted and needed. Repeatedly.

Excerpt – The Stubborn Billionaire by Lexxie Couper

She dropped her attention to the numerous sketches fanned out on the floor beside her, chewing on her bottom lip. “And I have plenty to start the painting.”

Looking at him again, she straightened from her stool. “I don’t think I’ll need to see you until next week. Maybe Monday morning? For an hour or so? Is that okay?”

No. I can’t go that long. I don’t want to. Damn it. That feeling of urgency to be around her hadn’t been part of his plan. The plan? What plan? Hadn’t he asked himself that exact question only a few days ago? When he’d first visited her home? So why did things feel so different now?

“Monday will be fine.” He dragged in a steadying breath. “I’ll bring breakfast.”

An unreadable light flared in her eyes. “No, that won’t be necessary.” Dropping into a fluid crouch, she collected the sketches from the floor.

He watched her, enjoying the way the smooth creamy line of her bent leg disappeared into the frayed hem of her denim shorts.

Christ, her thighs are exquisite. Almost sublime.

The urge to trace the velvet length of flesh filled his groin with fresh heat. He bit back a groan. At this rate, he’d never get out of the chair.

Stop thinking of her legs then.

“Why don’t you want me to bring breakfast?”

An almost imperceptible tension claimed her shoulders. “I can feed myself, thank you.”

He’d made her guard go up again. Not what he’d wanted to do at all. “I’m not saying you’re incapable of doing that.”

She looked up at him, green eyes direct. “It wouldn’t be professional.”

He laughed. He couldn’t help himself. “Nothing about our relationship is professional.”

She scowled and straightened, the roll of sketches in her hand held like a sword between them. “We don’t have a relationship.”

He studied her, his grip on his ankle painful. “What if I want one?”

Whoa. Where had that question come from?

She let out her own laugh. It played hell with his sanity. “We’ve had this conversation already. You hate me and blame me for your brother’s death. I despise you and everything you stand for and want nothing to do with you.”

“And yet we’ve just spent the last sixty minutes talking like we’re old friends. I’ve never seen you more at ease. Not really the behavior of someone who despises me, wouldn’t you say?”

She shrugged. “It allowed me to sketch you without your normal pompous arrogance.” If he didn’t know better, he’d say she was bored and indifferent to the whole situation. But he did know better. He affected her, as much as she did him. The fluttering pulse in her neck and her shallow breath gave her away.

Still, if he pushed it now, he would lose everything he’d gained today. He wanted her to trust him. So he could…

Destroy her?

The trilling chirp of her mobile phone saved him pondering the unnerving question. She placed the drawings on a nearby bench and hurried to the kitchen area and snatched her phone from the counter.

“Where is your gun?” she asked.

Where she wouldn’t get to it. “Don’t worry about it,” he said, then promised, “I won’t accidentally shoot you.”

“I figured.” Sighing long and loud, she got comfortable again. “I didn’t want to bump into it.”

“You won’t.” He didn’t mean to, but he kissed the top of her head. “Now sleep. We both need it.”

She said nothing else, and within five minutes her breaths had turned slow, deep and even. Apparently her mind had finally quieted.

Unfortunately, his did just the opposite and he ended up spending most of the night thinking very inappropriate, erotic, explicit things that had no place between a bodyguard and the woman he was assigned to protect.

Today’s feature post is an excerpt spotlight as part of the virtual blog tour for Diffraction by Jess Anastasi.

Excerpt

“You’re not going to die, all right? So don’t listen to him. Just hang on until I can get you hooked up to the ship’s diag systems. You know that would have been much easier if you hadn’t tipped over the gurney.”

A somber laugh escaped him but turned into a cough.

“Sorry, but the plan was to avoid being shot. Obviously that didn’t pan out so well.”

“And he’s got a sense of humor even when he’s dying,” she muttered, shoving some medical supplies out of the way that had gotten knocked about during the scuffle.

“Thought you said I wasn’t going to die.” Funny, but the pain seemed to be fading, although his body felt heavy all of a sudden, his mind slow and tired.

“I’m the doctor, that’s what I’m supposed to say.” She finished shoving equipment out of her way and turned back to him.

For a moment, he focused on her gorgeously disheveled mop of dark hair and those soft green eyes. She really did have the face of an angel hiding the core of pure metium reinforced steel inside her. Right at that moment, she looked like an angel who’d been put through hell. A sheen filled her eyes, leaving her blinking rapidly. He grabbed her hand covered in his blood, leaving the grip slippery.

“You’re not actually upset over me, are you?” She speared him with a pissed-off, indignant glare. “Of course I’m upset! You don’t deserve to die just because Rian wanted his damn curiosity sated.”

His muscles rapidly weakening, he reached up with his other hand to cup her cheek. “I’m not worth it, Kira. I’m a commando; it’s the only end I had coming.”

She leaned down, tugging her hand free to press the cloth harder against his injury. Her other hand came up to grip his chin. “I am not letting you die.”

Warm vibrations erupted from deep within him, his inherent abilities fully blooming. She was right, he wasn’t going to die, but when he survived, Rian was going to have even more damned questions.

The truth would be much harder to conceal.

The low reverberations streaming through him reached the wound, taking away the pain and leaving him breathing easier. But it was getting harder to keep his eyes open. Just before he succumbed to the healing sleep, Kira’s eyes widened, her hand releasing his to lift and cover where he still had his palm against her cheek.

“What in the stars—?”
